A response to J.B. Crawford's history of Lotus Notes on Computers Are Bad -- and what its rise and fall teaches about building a creative computing platform today.

## The Genealogy

Crawford traces Lotus Notes from PLATO, the 1960s military-funded teaching system at the University of Illinois, through Ray Ozzie's Iris Associates, to IBM's three-billion-dollar acquisition and eventual institutional embarrassment. The arc is familiar: an ambitious system built on academic ideals of user empowerment gets consumed by the enterprise market and dies of identity confusion.

But the technical details matter. PLATO's "notes" feature -- built in 1972 by two high schoolers -- was a public-first communication system. Shared spaces came before private messages. Everything was a note. Notes could be scripted, extended, composed into applications. The system did not differentiate between user data and program data at a low level.

This is an extraordinary sentence. It describes an architecture where the fundamental unit of content is also the fundamental unit of computation. The data IS the program. The user IS the programmer.

## The Familiar Problem

Crawford identifies Notes' fatal flaw with precision: it was a blank canvas that could be configured to meet virtually any need, and 99% of users launched it and wondered what to do.

He compares this to Emacs org-mode and Obsidian -- tools with fervent followings among the 1% who internalized the system, while everyone else bounces off the empty surface. The generality that made Notes powerful made it illegible. Microsoft won not by building something better but by building something narrower: Exchange for email, SharePoint for collaboration. Focused tools with obvious purposes defeated the unified system that could do anything but explained nothing.

This is the central risk for any blank-canvas computing system. It is AC's risk.

## Where AC Sits in This History

AC inherits the same lineage Crawford traces -- PLATO, Engelbart's Human Augmentation, Smalltalk, the whole tradition of computers as tools for thought. Pieces are AC's notes: a single .mjs or .lisp file is both program and content, publishable to a URL, forkable by anyone. KidLisp's parenthetical syntax puts end-user programming even closer to the spirit of PLATO than Notes ever managed.

The session server makes collaboration structural, not bolted on. UDP channels for real-time position sync, WebSocket for reliable game events, chat built into the runtime -- these descend from PLATO's public-first architecture. The multiplayer isn't a feature; it's the substrate.

So AC faces the same question that killed Notes: how do you build a system powerful enough to be anything without becoming a system that is nothing?

## Three Differences That Might Matter

**Identity.** Notes tried to be email, calendar, groupware, application platform, and database simultaneously. Crawford quotes a 1998 Forbes article: "Even before IBM arrived, Notes' identity had been blurred; it's no clearer now." It sounded like Zombocom: you can do anything. AC has a single identity: creative computing instrument. Pieces do one thing each. The system is a runtime for creative expression, not a productivity suite. The blank canvas exists, but it is a canvas for art, not for enterprise workflow. That constraint provides a frame.

**Standards.** Notes died on proprietary protocols. When SMTP became the internet's email standard, Exchange pivoted and Notes could not. AC runs on the open web: plain URLs, ES modules, WebSockets, WebRTC. There is no Notes protocol, no Domino server, no client-server proprietary handshake. A piece is a JavaScript file served over HTTPS. The browser is the runtime. If AC disappeared tomorrow, the pieces would still run in any module-capable browser.

**Scale of ambition.** Notes was sold to Fortune 500 companies as infrastructure. IBM spent billions trying to make it the backbone of corporate communication. AC is designed as a personal and social tool -- closer to PLATO's original educational context than to the enterprise groupware market that consumed Notes. The instrument metaphor keeps the scale human. You do not deploy an instrument to ten thousand employees. You pick it up, learn to play it, develop a practice.

## The Deeper Lesson

Crawford's real subject is not Lotus Notes. It is the recurring failure of a specific vision for computing -- one where users have genuine creative agency over their tools, where the boundary between using and programming is porous, where software serves as a medium for thought rather than a delivery mechanism for features.

This vision keeps emerging (PLATO, Smalltalk, HyperCard, Notes, wikis, Jupyter, Obsidian) and keeps losing to focused, opinionated, commercially controlled alternatives (Exchange, Google Docs, Slack, Notion). The pattern is so consistent it looks like a law of nature.

But Crawford's closing question disrupts the fatalism: "Will Gmail ever inspire such emotion?" The answer is obviously no. Nobody will remember Gmail the way people remember Notes -- with that volatile mixture of nostalgia and hatred that only comes from having used a tool powerful enough to reshape how you think.

The systems that inspire that emotion are the ones that treated users as authors, not consumers. They failed commercially. They succeeded experientially. The question is whether those two outcomes are necessarily linked, or whether the commercial failures were caused by specific, avoidable mistakes -- proprietary protocols, enterprise sales contexts, identity confusion -- rather than by the vision itself.

## The Bet

AC is a bet that the failures were contextual. That a blank-canvas computing system can survive if it has a clear identity (instrument, not platform), runs on open standards (the web, not a proprietary protocol), stays at human scale (personal practice, not enterprise deployment), and provides enough structure (the piece lifecycle, the prompt, the URL scheme) to make the canvas legible without making it rigid.

Notes proved that the vision works in practice -- it had millions of passionate users for over a decade. It also proved that the vision cannot survive contact with the enterprise market, proprietary lock-in, and institutional confusion about what the system actually is.

The lesson is not that blank canvases fail. The lesson is that blank canvases need frames.

Crawford's history is a cautionary tale and an origin story at the same time. Every system that tried to give users genuine creative power over their computing environment has eventually been replaced by something narrower, shinier, and more forgettable. AC exists in that tradition -- with the advantage of hindsight, open standards, and a refusal to become infrastructure. The piece lifecycle is the frame. The URL is the address. The instrument metaphor is the identity. Whether that is enough to break the pattern is an open question. But at least the mistakes are catalogued.
